Scaling WIL with Global Impact

Following a 2017 mandate to have 100% of students experience WIL, the University of Toronto Scarborough’s business program needed a plan.  By 2019, they reached their goal but saw much more potential. Join us to discuss how WIL can be efficiently scaled, but more importantly, learn about the future local and global opportunities that it presents.

Work-Integrated Learning in Complex Contexts: A Multi-Country Systems Model from Aga Khan University

How can work-integrated learning function effectively within complex, resource-constrained systems?

This session explores Aga Khan University’s multi-country model of work-integrated learning across health sciences, education, and community systems in Pakistan, East Africa, and Europe. Rather than positioning WIL solely as industry placement, AKU embeds experiential learning directly within health systems, schools, media ecosystems, and development agencies.

    The presentation will examine:

    • Integrating WIL within service delivery institutions
    • Structuring cross-sector and cross-border partnerships
    • Governance mechanisms that sustain long-term collaboration
    • Aligning WIL with workforce development and social accountability

Participants will gain comparative insights into how WIL models can be adapted to complex global contexts while maintaining academic rigor and partnership coherence.

    Fareena Feroze

Designing FIT Graduates: Building a Scalable Work-Integrated Learning Ecosystem Across Mexico and Latin America

Higher education in Mexico and Latin America continues to face a gap between academic preparation and workforce readiness. This session presents how Tecmilenio is designing FIT graduates by embedding Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) as a structural, measurable, and scalable component of its academic model.

Through industry co-designed projects, social impact initiatives, and entrepreneurial venture development integrated across programs and campuses, the institution has evolved from fragmented experiential activities to a coherent WIL ecosystem. The presentation will share the key design decisions, governance model, and early impact indicators that have enabled implementation at scale – offering a replicable framework for systemic transformation across Latin America.

Tecmilenio is a non-profit private University in Mexico serving 66,000 students at 32 campuses around Mexico and also has a strong online presence for bachelor’s and master’s degree granting programs.
